IPL 2019, MI vs DC: Delhi Capitals end unwanted streak with win over Mumbai Indians
Delhi Capitals rode brilliant performances from Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma to start their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 campaign with a win over Mumbai Indians.
Delhi Capitals rode brilliant performances from Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma to start their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 campaign with a win over Mumbai Indians in Mumbai on Sunday.
This was the first time since 2012 that Delhi Capitals won their opening game of the season. In 2012, they defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 8 wickets with good performances from Irfan Pathan and Morne Morkel.
The Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, haven’t recorded a victory in their first IPL match since 2012. In 2012, Richard Levi and Lasith Malinga were the top performers as they defeated Chennai Super Kings.
Rishabh Pant’s blazing half-century guided Delhi Capitals to a 37-run win over Mumbai Indians on Sunday.
Sent into bat, Delhi were helped by Colin Ingram’s 32-ball 47 and Shikhar Dhawan’s 43 at the Wankhede Stadium, before Pant smashed the Mumbai bowlers for seven sixes and as many fours to power them to 213 for six.
In reply, MI were stopped at 176 in 19.2 overs as an injured Jasprit Bumrah failed to turn up with the bat. Veteran Yuvraj Singh top-scored for the hosts with 53 off 35 balls.
“I can’t really say about (World Cup) selection but Rishabh was outstanding today,” 37-year-old Yuvraj told reporters at the post match media conference.
“He (Pant) had an outstanding season last year as well. He is playing well in Test matches as well. To score two hundreds overseas at such an age (21 years) shows his character. It is important that we groom him well and hopefully he is the next big thing for us,” said Yuvraj, who was member of the 2011 World Cup winning Indian team.
