Delhi Capitals, who have finally come together to play like ‘Daredevils’, will have to produce another special effort to beat the consistent Chennai Super Kings for the first time this season and make their maiden IPL final in Visakhapatnam on Friday.
It was CSK who denied Delhi a top-two spot in the league standings with a crushing 80-run win at Chepauk and the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side stands in their way again, only stakes are much higher in the Qualifier 2.
The tense win in the Eliminator, set up by their star player Rishabh Pant, here on Wednesday night is bound to provide an extra dose of motivation going into the knock-out game at Vizag. Let’s take a look at some important player battles that could decide the outcome of the match.
Shane Watson vs Amit Mishra
Opener Shane Watson has been hot and cold in the tournament and will look for a big innings and fire his team into the final. But things aren’t going to be easy for the right-hander as he will have to come up against his old nemesis Axar Patel. Watson has been dismissed by the spinner five times in the past and he has scored just 70 runs off 56 deliveries from Axar. Expect the all-rounder to be introduced early when CSK come to bat.
MS Dhoni vs Amit Mishra
Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has led CSK’s charge with great aplomb this season and he will be expected of the same in this crunch contest. Dhoni will have to deal with spinner Amit Mishra who usually operates in the middle-overs. Mishra has kept Dhoni quiet in the IPL as he has bowled 41 balls to the right-hander and conceded just 50 runs. Mishra has also dismissed Dhoni once before in the cash-rich league.
Suresh Raina vs Chris Morris
Left-hander Suresh Raina too has been among the runs for CSK this season and he will look to continue the same against a potent DC bowling attack. Delhi all-rounder Chris Morris has caused problems for Raina in the past as he has given just 21 runs off 23 deliveries but more importantly, the South African has dismissed the southpaw thrice.
Prithvi Shaw vs Deepak Chahar
DC opener Prithvi Shaw struck a majestic fifty in the last match against SRH and will look to add the prized scalp of CSK into his kitty. But Shaw will come up against medium-pacer Deepak Chahar, who has troubled the teenager multiple times in the past. Off 23 Chahar deliveries, Shaw has managed to score just 22 runs and he has been dismissed by the CSK bowler three times.
Shikhar Dhawan vs Harbhajan Singh
The experience of Shikhar Dhawan at the top has come in handy for DC this season and it has helped the youngsters bat well around him. Against CSK, he will come up against Indian teammate Harbhajan Singh, who has shared the new ball with Deepak Chahar on multiple occasions this year. Harbhajan has bowled 118 deliveries to Dhawan and has conceded 146 runs but the off-spinner has managed to dismiss the southpaw twice.
