IPL 2022: Schedule of league games released; Ahmedabad may hold playoffs
The March 26 to May 29 IPL with 10 teams starts with a meeting of 2021 finalists Chennai Super Kings (champions) and Kolkata Knight Riders (runners-up)
The Indian cricket board (BCCI) announced the schedule for the league phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday with last year’s champions Chennai Super Kings and runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders kicking off the 15th season on March 26 at the Wankhede stadium, Mumbai. A total of 70 league matches and four playoff games will be played over 65 days.

With the addition of Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, this will see IPL return to being a 10-team event for the first time since 2011.
This also marks a change in the tournament format with the teams divided into two groups based on their past records. The order of groupings becomes important as each team plays five teams twice and the other four teams once—two of them only at home and the other two only away.
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians and four-time winners CSK have been placed in separate groups but will play each other twice, home and away.
Twelve double headers will be played across weekends. The final league match will be played on May 22, between Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The afternoon matches start at 3.30 pm and the evening matches are slated for a 7.30 pm start. The final is slated for May 29. The playoffs are likely to be held in Ahmedabad, though BCCI is yet to confirm that.
It has been announced that the league matches will be played by creating a bio-bubble in the Mumbai-Pune belt, spread across 4 stadiums – Wankhede and DY Patil, Navi Mumbai to host 20 matches each with Mumbai’s Brabourne stadium and Pune's Maharashtra Cricket Association stadium to host 15 matches each.
All teams have been assigned the same number of matches at each of the four venues. Although no team gets to keep gate proceeds this year—so far, the Maharashtra govt has allowed 25 percent.
Mumbai Indians will feel at home in four of their league matches. They will be played at their home stadium, Wankhede.
