Chirag Jani

Age 36IndiaINDIA
Right Handed All Rounder

Chirag Jani has been one of Saurashtra's most dependable all-rounders over the past decade, making his biggest impact with his ability to contribute in both departments. A right-handed batter and right-arm medium-pacer, Jani grew up in Mahuva in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district and was introduced to organised cricket after his family moved to Bhavnagar. His father, Suresh, had played cricket at district level, and Jani progressed through the local system before graduating to the Saurashtra junior and senior sides. He made his List A debut in 2012 and made an immediate impression, scoring 98 from 67 balls against Maharashtra while batting at No. 10, almost taking them to an incredible win.

Jani's progress in first-class cricket was slower, however, as he was initially regarded as a better white-ball player. He made his first-class debut for Saurashtra during the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy season but found opportunities difficult to come by in the early years. His breakthrough eventually came in the 2019-20 campaign, when he produced the best season of his career to that point, scoring 544 runs and taking 17 wickets as Saurashtra went on to win their maiden Ranji Trophy title. He finished that tournament with two hundreds and two fifties, while his medium pace gave the side another useful option with the ball.

That season marked the beginning of Jani's transformation into a genuine red-ball all-rounder. His versatility was highlighted during the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy, when he was promoted to No. 3 and responded with a career-best 235 against Odisha, his maiden first-class double hundred. He followed that with 140 against Goa in the very next match, demonstrating that he could adapt his batting position according to the team's needs. His ability to contribute in both disciplines made him particularly valuable to Saurashtra, who could rely on him as a middle-order batter while also using his medium pace to break partnerships.

Jani remained central to Saurashtra's domestic dominance in the following years. He was a key figure in their 2022–23 Ranji Trophy title-winning side, scoring an unbeaten 60 in the first innings of the final against Bengal to secure crucial command of the match. He ended the season with 569 runs and 15 wickets, and was also crucial with his all-round contribution in winning the Vijay Hazare Trophy in the same season. His skills have also earned him franchise opportunities abroad, including stints in Bangladesh playing for Brothers Union and Legends of Rupganj.

He continued to deliver key contributions in the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy season, scoring 408 runs in seven matches, headlined by a top score of 152. He also remained a lethal option with the ball, highlighted by a sharp spell of 4/78 against Chandigarh that sealed an innings-and-56-run victory. He also scored 372 runs and picked up 13 wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was later named in the Saurashtra squad for the Ranji Trophy 2026/27. Over a career spanning more than a decade, Jani has continually reinvented his game, evolving from an aggressive lower-order hitter into a composed middle-order anchor and reliable medium-pacer who gives Saurashtra indispensable balance across all formats.
