Geoff Boycott

Age 85EnglandENGLAND
Right Handed Batsman

An uncompromising master of defensive technique, Sir Geoffrey Boycott built his international career on concentration, self-preservation, and a refusal to give his wicket away. Born in Fitzwilliam, Yorkshire, the right-handed opening batter developed a meticulous approach to batting that prioritized blunting the new ball and wearing down opposing bowlers through absolute patience. Equipped with a textbook defense, high backlift, and intense mental discipline, Boycott became one of the most stubborn adversaries for opening attacks worldwide.

Boycott entered the international arena in June 1964 against Australia at Trent Bridge. Over an 18-year Test career spanning from 1964 to 1982, he established himself as a pillar at the top of England's order. He reached a landmark personal moment in August 1977 during the fourth Ashes Test at his home ground of Headingley, becoming the first player to record his 100th first-class century in a Test match when he scored 191 against Australia. Upon stepping away from international cricket, he held the distinction of being England's top Test run-scorer, accumulating 8,114 runs in 108 matches with 22 centuries.

On the domestic circuit, Boycott was a powerhouse for Yorkshire across 25 seasons from 1962 to 1986, scoring 32,570 runs and 103 centuries for his home county alone. Over his entire first-class career, he amassed 48,426 runs with 151 centuries, placing him among the highest run-scorers and century-makers in first-class history. He remains one of only two batters to average over 100 in an English first-class season on two separate occasions, achieving the feat in 1971 and 1979.

Appointed an OBE in 1980 for services to cricket and knighted in 2019, Boycott moved into broadcasting following his playing days. Serving as a longtime commentator, his blunt, analytical commentary and famous references to the corridor of certainty secured his status as one of cricket's most recognized voices.
