BJP dubs Sunday's Rahul rally as poll stunt

Blaming the previous Congress govt for badly managing relief operations, BJP asks Congress national vice-president Rahul Gandhi to first get UPA release Rs 8,000 crore Central aid for rebuilding the flood-hit state

DEHRADUN: The Bhartiya Janata Party has dubbed Rahul Gandhi’s proposed Sunday rally here in Dehradun and his “desire” to see the disaster-hit people as a poll stunt. If he is so concerned, let the Congress vice-president first ask the UPA government to release Rs 8,000 crore for rebuilding the areas ravaged by the deluge last year, the BJP said.

The proposed rally will be Gandhi’s first ahead of the Lok Sabha election. During his visit, the Congress leader is expected to interact with the people displaced by the June disaster
as well as a group of ex-servicemen.

The BJP, meanwhile, has dubbed as a poll stunt Gandhi’s move to see ex-servicemen and disaster-hit people.

“It’s all a poll stunt the Congress vice-president is playing to woo the people ahead of the Lok Sabha election,” said leader of opposition Ajay

“If he is so concerned about the disaster-hit people let him first ask his (UPA) government at the Centre to release Rs 8,000 crore that it had allocated for rebuilding areas ravaged by the June deluge”, he said on Saturday.

Bhatt also mocked at the Congress for its move to hold the rally on Sunday instead of Saturday as scheduled earlier owing to prediction of rain.
“Forecast of even a little rain made them (Congress) postpone their leader’s rally,” the BJP leader said.

He, however, alleged that the preceding Vijay Bahuguna-led Congress government failed to display such swiftness in evacuating thousands of people who remained stranded in the disaster-hit areas for three days without food, water and shelter after the cataclysmic rains ravaged the state in June 2013.
“In fact, the bodies of hundreds of people who were killed in the rain disaster are still buried under the debris even eight months after the deluge hit the state”, Bhatt alleged.

“They (Congress government) haven’t even disposed of the bodies from the disaster hit areas”, he further alleged.Bhatt pooh-poohed the Congress’ claim that the UPA government approved ‘one-rank-one-pension’ in its interim budget at the instance of Rahul Gandhi.

“This entire claim is baseless”, the BJP leader said. He claimed that the UPA government approved the ex-servicemen’s long pending demand for ‘one-rank-one-pension’ under pressure from the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

“Modiji had in a rally addressed in Haryana sometime back had demanded that the UPA government immediately concede the ex-servicemen’s long unresolved demand”, he claimed.
