The Delhi Police on Sunday found 15 dead oxen in an abandoned truck in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area along National Highway- 8. Police suspect that the cattle may have been left unattended for at least two days and that they probably died of heat and starvation.

The carcasses have been sent for medical examination to ascertain the cause of death, senior police officers said.

Police said they received information at the Vasant Kunj South police station on Sunday morning about a parked truck along the highway from where a foul smell was emanating.

Deputy commissioner of police (Southwest) Devender Arya said that on checking, a police team found 15 oxen dead in the container. “An FIR was registered under Section 429 for mischief by killing or maiming cattle at the Vasant Kunj South police station. It was found that the driver of the container was missing. Efforts to trace the owner and the driver are being made,” said the DCP.

Police said that the carcasses have been sent to a veterinary hospital in Masoodpur for medical examination. Police suspect driver and other truck employees may have fled after finding cattle dead and fearing an attack by locals.
