Delhi: Two girls raped, left to die by 21-year-old man

Two girls, aged six and eight, were allegedly raped and then strangled by a 21-year-old man in outer Delhi’s Bawana on Friday.
Pankaj Kumar, a factory worker and neighbour, left the girls in the park presuming that they were dead. The girls, police said pretended to be dead to save their lives.
Kumar was arrested soon after the incident on Saturday. The girls, who are now in post-operative care are said to be critical.
According to the police, the girls who are neighbours, were playing outside their house when the man approached them and gave them money to fetch a medicine. Kumar reportedly lured the girls promising them a candy if they fetched him the medicine. The girls went to the store but could not find the medicine. Kumar allegedly then asked the girls to accompany him to another shop but instead took them to the park.
Police said that the sister of one of the girls tried to accompany them but the man asked her to leave. He even have her some money and asked her to get some candies for herself. He then allegedly took the two girls to the park where he raped them.
“We have arrested Pankaj Kumar. A case of rape has been registered against him and he has been sent to 14-day judicial custody,” DCP (Rohini district) Rishi Pal said.
After raping the girls, the man allegedly strangled both of them. “As they cried asking for help, the man first smothered them and then strangled them. As the girls stopped crying to save themselves, the man thought they were dead. He left the girls inside a pit and fled,” a senior police officer said.
Meanwhile, since the girls did not return home till late at night, their parents started searching for them. They first looked in the neighborhood and then made a PCR call. The locals then made teams to search for the girls.
“The father of one of the girls went to the park searching for his daughter and found clothes scattered. When he called out her name, the girls who were hiding in a pit, came out and narrated their ordeal. The man then informed the police and a case was registered,” a police officer said.
The police then took the girls to the hospital where they have been admitted for treatment.
The girls told the police that they had seen the man visiting the grocery store and also gave his description. Based on the information the police identified and then traced Kumar.
