Delhi: Two killed as speeding SUV rams pedestrians, breaks wall, falls into drain
A speeding Mahindra XUV rammed a scooty and two pedestrians at a busy traffic junction in west Delhi’s Paschim Vihar on Tuesday morning, killing two persons.
The SUV driven recklessly went on to break through a wall before plunging into a drain. One of the victims was thrown several feet into the air before landing on the car’s bonnet, CCTV footage of the accident showed.
The man behind the SUV’s wheel emerged from the car, allegedly stared at an eyewitness and then fled.
The eyewitness, a private security guard, stopped an e-rickshaw, loaded the injured men and took them to a nearby hospital. But two of the victims, Durgesh and Kalil Chadha, died during treatment.
The accident happened on Ramdev Marg in Paschim Vihar at 9.30 am on Tuesday. The XUV500, that appeared to be at high speed, was allegedly trying to cross the signal at a busy traffic junction when it hit a pedestrian and a scooty while taking a U-turn on the road ahead.
Immediately after the hit, the car swerved to its left and hit one more pedestrian before breaking through a wall to drive into the drain.
All this was witnessed by many people, including Rajesh, a security guard at an educational institute near the spot. “The SUV driver paused for a while on spotting me, but then immediately escaped from the spot. I can identify him if paraded before me,” said Rajesh who rushed the victims to a hospital.
Police said the number of XUV was enough to identify the car owner. Identified as Saurabh Jain, a resident of Ashok Vihar, the man allegedly behind the wheel was arrested the same day.
A case of causing death by negligence, causing hurt by a dangerous act and rash driving has been registered against him at Paschim Vihar police station.
