A 23-year-old property dealer was critically injured after four armed men publically chased him and pumped bullets into him in Rohini’s Sector 11 on Friday evening. The man was hit by four out of the 16 gunshots the assailants allegedly fired at him.
The incident was caught on a CCTV camera, the footage of which went viral on social media on Saturday.
Ruling out any possibility of criminal rivalry behind the attack, the police said they have identified the suspects and raids to arrest them are underway.
The police have identified the victim as Manish, who lives in outer Delhi’s Kheda Khurd village with his parents. According to the police, around 6.30pm on Friday, when Manish and his three friends were passing through Sector 11 in an Accent car, four men in a white Swift car intercepted their vehicle.
“Locals and witnesses said that four men armed with pistols got out of the car and started firing at Manish’s car. Seeing this Manish got out hurriedly and tried to run towards the gate of a colony. The four men started chasing Manish and one of them fired at him indiscriminately,” a police officer, who did not wish to be named, said.
The police said that one bullet hit Manish in the waist and he collapsed. “The four men then rained bullets on him, four of which hit Manish below that chest,” the officer said.
Since the incident took place in the evening, there were residents and passersby in the vicinity.
A video of the attack that surfaced later showed the four men fleeing the spot, leaving Manish bleeding profusely, the police said. The video also showed residents rushing into their houses as the men opened fire.
Manish was then rushed to a hospital by the friends who were with him in the car and the incident was reported to the police.
The police are, however, probing all possibilities, from extortion to personal enmity, behind the attack and have detained a few suspects for questioning.
Deputy commissioner of police (Rohini) SD Mishra said that Manish is under treatment at a private hospital and is fit to give his statement. “He has multiple bullet injuries. We have recorded his statement in which he said he has no dispute with anyone. A case under attempt to murder and other relevant sections has been registered,” Mishra said.
The DCP said they have identified the main accused with the help of CCTV footage and raids to arrest him are underway. “We have not found Mnish to be involved in any criminal activity. It does not look like criminal rivalry. Statement of his friends was also recorded but nothing significant was noted,” he said. DCP said that a crime and forensics team was rushed to the spot and two bullet shells were recovered from the spot. “Locals claimed that the men fired 10-15 rounds. We are trying to establish that with the help of witnesses and CCTV footage. We are also checking the criminal records of Manish’s friends who were accompanying him,” he said.
Mishra also said that the police will record Manish’s statement again. “As he is under medication, we could not get all the details,,” the DCP said.
