A 10-year-old girl and her younger sister returned to their northeast Delhi home to find their mother killed and their ‘stepfather’ running away from the crime scene on Friday evening, police said on Sunday.

A case of murder has been registered against the man at Welcome police station, police officials said.

Police said the murder was a result of the frequent quarrels between the couple over two legal battles they were embroiled in. “A few years ago, the woman had filed a rape case against the man,” Atul Kumar Thakur, deputy commissioner of police (north-east), said, adding that the two later got married but the legal battle continued. Moreover, the woman had recently filed for a divorce and that case was also going on, police said.

The woman — who had separated from her first husband around seven years ago — sold garments for a living. She had two daughters – aged 10 and 7 — from her first marriage.

For the last five-six years, she had been living with the suspect. “The man was unemployed and would frequently beat up my sister. She had filed for a divorce and the hearing was ongoing,” said the victim’s sister.

On Friday, the couple was to attend a court hearing in one of the cases but they did not visit the court. Instead, they quarrelled at home and the man sent away his two stepdaughters to their grandparents’ home.

But the children decided to return to their home around 5 pm as the younger girl insisted on being with her mother. “We were climbing the stairs of our home when I saw my stepfather and our two relatives running away from our house,” the 10-year-old girl told police in her statement.

When they walked into their room, they found the woman lying motionless under a pile of clothes. When their mother did not respond to their tugs, the children went back to their grandparents and alerted them.

The family soon realised that the woman was murdered and alerted the police. A case was murder was subsequently registered on the girl’s statement.

The girl identified the two other suspects as her stepfather’s brother and father but the DCP said that the role of the other two men is yet to be ascertained. The police have been unable to nab any of the three suspects yet.
