Cafeterias built from airport scrap at Delhi airports
From the cafeterias’ table tops to the grid ceilings and from seating arrangements to lamp shades, everything has been built using dismantled machine parts, scrap from airport building and recycled metallic and plastic structures.
The Delhi airport operator has constructed four cafeterias out of recycled material at its international and domestic terminals for airport staff and visitors.
One of the four cafeterias is situated on the third level of Terminal-3 (T-3), another near the parking bay, one in the T-3 basement and one near arrival area of the Terminal-2 (T-2). (HTPhotos)

An officer from the airport operator Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said the cafeterias were built entirely using scrap generated from the renovation of the Terminal-1D (T-1D) and Terminal-3.
“Furniture has also been built out of scrap and reusable fabric. We have also reused concrete leftover boards to cover the exposed wires and surfaces of the walls. Lamp shades put in the cafeterias are also made from recycled material,” a Delhi International Airport Ltd spokesperson said.
“As the airport expansion works are underway, we expect to process massive quantities of waste or refurbished materials and use those creatively to build several such facilities,” the spokesperson said.
