Three people were injured after their Honda City car collided rammed into a water cannon vehicle parked outside Parliament Street police station in New Delhi area on Sunday morning.
Madhur Verma, deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) said that initial probe has revealed that the man behind the wheel of the Honda City car was not drunk and was carrying a valid driving licence. He, however, was speeding and driving in the wrong lane.
The impact of the accident was such that the front and left portions of the Honda City was left completely mangled. However, all the four occupants of the car had a miraculous escape with three of them only receiving bone injuries, which police said were not life-threatening.
Police shared the first names of the injured as Arun, 29, Priyanka, 27, and Krishan, 27. While Arun and Priyanka are residents of south Delhi’s Govindpuri, Krishan lives in east Delhi’s Sonia Vihar. There was also a fourth person in the car, but the police have few details about him and believe he escaped unhurt.
“Arun deals in second hand cars. The Honda City involved in the accident too is a used car. Arun was behind the wheel of the car which was headed towards Bangla Saheb Gurdwara when the accident took place at 5.10am. Arun and Priyanka were sitting in the front while the other two occupied the rear seat,” said an investigator.
Police said that the accident took place right outside the Parliament Street police station when the “speeding” Honda City car was going towards Connaught Place.
“A WagonR car was exiting from a bylane. The driver of the Honda City, which apparently was on the wrong lane, lost control while trying to avoid hitting the WagonR,” said the investigator.
The Honda City car, however, ended up hitting the bumper of the WagonR, spiralled out of control and crashed into a water cannon nearby. “The accident was captured on a CCTV camera nearby. The WagonR car sped away immediately and we are yet to identify its registration number,” said the officer.
The injured were rushed to AIIMS trauma centre in an auto-rickshaw. Police received a call about the accident from the hospital authorities.
“Priyanka suffered the most injuries and has fractured her ribs. Arun and Krishan escaped with fractures in their limbs,” said the officer. A case of rash driving and causing hurt by a negligent act has been registered at Parliament Street police station.
