Aam Aadmi Party MLA Jarnail Singh helped stop an SUV that rammed into a police checkpost in an attempt to get past a barricaded section of Southwest Delhi’s Naraina flyover on Tuesday evening.
A video of the incident showed a traffic police constable clinging onto the vehicle’s bonnet, trying to make it stop. However, when the man behind the wheel kept driving, Singh – who was passing by in his car at the time – reportedly gave chase and forced the vehicle to a halt.
Even as the man stepped out, his female companion was heard reprimanding the MLA and the policeman for flagging them down. A scrutiny of the vehicle documents reportedly showed that they were not in order.
The incident occurred around 5.30 pm, while Singh was returning from work.
The MLA, however, said that the man was released soon after the incident. “Yesterday, police was on routine barricading. There was a car that didn’t stop, and a constable clung on to its bonnet in an attempt to stop it. I even recorded a video of the incident. Police assured action, but after a call from a senior officer, the man was allowed to leave with the issuance of a simple challan,” said Singh.
Deputy commissioner of police (west) Vijay Kumar said he did not receive any complaint from the traffic constable. “I was told that the car driver was challaned,” he added.
