NEW DELHI: Two aspiring doctors, including a 22-year-old woman from Manipur, were electrocuted in two separate cases reported from the capital in the past 24 hours.

The first case was reported from North Delhi’s Maurice Nagar area on Tuesday when Ringam Sungnem, a resident of Christian Colony and an aspiring doctor, suffered an electric shock from an air cooler, when she switched it on with her wet hands.

Hearing her cries for help, three men from the neighbouring building rushed to rescue her but could not enter the house as it was locked. They then broke the door, entered the house and switched off the power mains. Sungnem had fallen unconscious by then. She was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

“I spoke to her only yesterday and she was completely fine. She even had a long chat with her parents and today we woke up to such a news. Her parents, both of them, are devastated on losing their only child. How life is so uncertain” Shelmi Shankhi, her uncle said.

The police have initiated an inquest proceeding in the matter. “The cooler was not connected to the socket properly and the current was leaking since the wire was damaged. She probably tried to switch it on with wet hands and got a shock. We have initiated an inquiry and suspect no foul play in the matter,” a senior police officer said.

In the second case reported from Southwest Delhi’s Bindapur area, a 21-year-old man, preparing for medical exam entrance, was electrocuted while filling water in a desert cooler.

Shehzad Ali reportedly tried to put water in the cooler while it was switched on and suffered an electric shock. “He came home in the afternoon and went straight to take a bath. After coming out from the bathroom, he went straight to put water inside the cooler. He did not switch off the cooler, nor was he wearing his slippers. He was also wet as he had just taken a bath,” an investigator said.

“An inquiry into the matter has been initiated,” he said.
