The incident came to light on Thursday after neighbours of the victim heard her scream and informed the police. The cops later said the husband and wife had a troubled marriage and fought often over issues related to money.

“An FIR has been registered at Jewar police station and the investigations have been launched. The victim is out of danger and has been shifted to a Noida hospital. The case will be investigated thoroughly,” said Dileep Singh, deputy superintendent of police, Jewar. The police said the woman and her husband had earlier filed complaints against each other following a fight.

“The statement of the complainant will be recorded once she recovers. We have detained the accused husband who has so far denied any involvement in the incident,” said Singh.

According to the police, the husband has denied setting the woman on fire and instead claimed that his wife immolated herself after having a fight with him on Thursday morning.

“The accused said they often had fights and their marriage had been unsteady for the last two years,” said a senior police officer.

A police team later visited the spot to verify the authenticity of the complaint. An officer investigating the case said: “The crime spot seems in order and there were barely any signs of a scuffle.”
