After boxer, athlete held for inmate’s escape

NEW DELHI: A national gold medal-winning athlete, who represented Haryana in 2013, was on Monday arrested for aiding a gangster’s escape from police custody.
Parveen alias Lara, 22, is the third member of gangster Jitender Gogi’s gang to be arrested since Gogi’s escape on July 30. Gogi’s is still on the run.
Last week, police arrested Deepak Pahwal — an Indian boxer who represented India in many international tournaments — and his friend Mohit for aiding Gogi’s escape.
On July 30, the police were taking Go gi to a Haryana court in a government interstate bus. When they crossed Bahadurgarh, Parveen, Deepak, Mohit and their associates stopped the bus, attacked the cops and freed Gogi.
Joint commissioner of police (crime) RS Yadav said Parveen alias Lara is a member of Gogi’s gang. Yadav said that on Monday they received a tip-off about Parveen who was visiting his associates in Narela to hide for a couple of days.
“Parveen had come to make arrangements for his expenses. We laid a trap near the CNG petrol pump and arrested him,” Yadav said. Parveen had left athletics to join Gogi’s gang.
Parveen reportedly told the police that on July 30, he and Deepak and another man Sanjay – yet to be arrested – and boarded the same interstate bus in which Gogi was travelling. Four Delhi police officers had taken an interstate bus from ISBT Kashmere Gate to take Gogi to court.
“After boarding the bus before Bahadurg arh, they informed their friends about the cops inside and the number of the bus. On the way, one Rohit boarded the bus before Bahadurgarh and kept the back door open. The others kept on following the bus in two different cars, one of which was stolen the night before,” said a police officer.
Go gi’s men stopped the bus near Sankhol village in Bahadurgarh and threw chill powder at the police personnel before robbing an MP-5 rifle and freeing him.
Police said they are looking for his other members and trying to recover the rifle.
