Boxing ex-champ held for helping undertrial escape

NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old national-level boxer and another criminal were arrested on Tuesday for aiding a gangster’s escape from police custody.

NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old national-level boxer and another criminal were arrested on Tuesday for aiding a gangster’s escape from police custody.

Deepak Pahal, a Sonepat resident and 2011 junior lightweight boxing national champion, was among the 10 who attacked a police team and helped gangster, Jitender alias Gogi, escape on Saturday. Mo hit, who has two criminal cases against him, was arrested from Mukarba Chowk near Rohini.

On July 30, four police officers, who were taking Gogi to the Haryana court for a hearing, were attacked by 10 men near Bahadurgarh. The policemen had boarded a bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate and around 6am, the men got into the bus and threw chilli powder on the four officers before snatching their guns and rifles and freeing Jitender.

“On Tuesday, we received information about the presence of a member of Jitender’s gang, involved in his escape, at Gannour in Sonepat. Our team acted on the tip-off and arrested Pahal. He confessed that he along with his associates Rohit, Deepak, Sanjay, Praveen and three others, freed Jitender,” said Yadav.

In 2015, Pa hal was removed from the Sports Authority of India hostel. He said he got into the gang for easy money.
