NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal on Wednesday held a “chamber meeting” with officials of the Delhi Development Authority, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the Union ministry of water resources and other government agencies to resolve issues related to the implementation of the ‘Maili se Nirmal Yamuna’ revitalisation project, 2017.

Last year, the NGT had ordered the implementation of an extensive decentralised sewage treatment plan for the river as part of the Yamuna order. The first phase of this STP project is yet to start because of a difference between the DJB and the Centre over the mode of payment of more than Rs 1,000 crore.

“The NGT, while hearing a petition by activist Manoj Misra, had on January 13 given a judgment titled ‘Maili se Nirmal Yamuna Revitalisation Plan 2017’. This meeting was called to oversee the execution of the project. The bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar is expected to pass an order soon, in all probability, on Thursday clarifying this issue of mode of payment,” a lawyer present at the meeting, who did not wish to be named, said.

According to sources, the ministry of water resources has said it will pay the amount in annuity mode and not all at once.

The green court had, in May, also constituted a five-member committee to inspect DJB’s five sewage treatment plants, under the first phase of clean river Yamuna project, to look into the effluent discharge and quantum of input and output.
