Parents claim victory over school that ‘looted’ them

The Delhi government took over the management of two branches of the school on Wednesday over allegations of violations of education laws.
“The movement was run entirely by the parents as we were tired of the harassment by the school authorities. We gave the details to the government. We fought with them for three years,” said Arvind Dikshit, the president of the parents association of the Pitampura branch of the school.
The school did not have a parents association. The aggrieved parents got together and decided to highlight the alleged irregularities the schools were involved in. Parents have alleged that in the name of different charitable trusts, a family was running the school.
“We have given records to the government that shows that the school had a monthly earning of Rs 30 crore — Rs 10 lakh a day. There was no proper school management and parents were never allowed to raise their problems with the authorities,” said Dikshit.
The annual increase in the fees was one of the first issues that the parents start protesting over.
“In a year we were paying a little more than Rs 1 lakh, excluding the transportation fees. We were forced to buy books and uniform from the school and never given a receipt for it. How much could we tolerate? We decided to take up the issue with the government,” said Amit Khanduja, whose two kids study in the school.
Though the parents were excited over the decision, some of them were concerned if it meant change in the academic staff.
“We are very happy that the government has taken over. In the name of educational trust they were looting we parents. I just hope only the management is changing and not the teachers. The teachers are very good,” said another parent who did not want to be named.
