NOIDA: Hundreds of students of Amity University on Tuesday staged a protest against the college administration demanding ouster of two of their employees over the suicide of a student.

Amity Law School student Sushant Rohilla had allegedly committed suicide at his Delhi residence on August 10 after he was barred from appearing in exams due to short attendance.

“The university cannot play with the lives of the students. There must be a strict rule for the teachers who refuse to hear the pleas of the student,” said Sarmishtha, a student of the university.

The students carrying placards shouted slogans against the two college professors — Ishita Rutabhasini, professor of political science and BP Singh Sehgal, director of Amity Law School — accusing them of abetting Sushant’s suicide.

“We are demanding immediate ouster of the professors,” said Bhushan Sinh, a college student.

Scores of students visited Sushant’s parents at Laxmi Bai Nagar in Delhi. His sister Mehak Rohilla said, “My brother has been an active participant in extra-curricular activities. In February, he had a fracture in the leg yet he participated in many extra-curricular activities. He was multitalented and he never deserved to be detained,” Mehak told HT.

Sushant’s father Jagdish Rohilla, an official with the Rajya Sabha, said, “My son was forced to commit suicide. In the month of May, he had written to the college that he was depressed over the fact that he would be detained. However, none of the college people took notice of his letter and finally he took the extreme step. Nobody from the college informed us that he had written such letter. We got to know about it after he left us,” he said.

The college administration, however, said it had no role in setting up rules for the law school in which Sushant was enrolled.
