14 arrested, locals march for peace

Police arrest 14 people for spreading riots, destroying public property and attacking policemen following clashes between the police and civilians in Jamia Nagar, reports Vijaita Singh.

The police have arrested 14 people for spreading riots, destroying public property and attacking policemen following clashes between the police and civilians in Jamia Nagar on Saturday.

Among the arrested are Imran, Salman, S Alam, Parvesh Alam, A Alvi, Shaheed, M Wazi, M Nazim, Maqsood, Zakir, Mustaqeen, Arif, Riyasat and M Javed.



Meanwhile, residents of Jamia Nagar took out a peace march on Sunday afternoon and requested the locals to restore peace in the area. "Whatever happened is unfortunate. The policemen were trying to remove encroachments based on complaints by locals," said Zameer Ahmed, a local resident.



Two police posts were torched and several vehicles were vandalised by a mob. "We were being attacked from all sides, the police had to fire in the air," said Anil Shukla, DCP (south).
