According to police, the incident took place on Thursday night when some stray dogs started barking when a local resident, Mewa Lal, 28, a plumber by profession, was passing by a street in a JJ colony in the Bakkarwala area.

“Bal Mukund, the grandfather of the accused, 25-year-old Raj Kumar, started arguing with Mewa Lal and accused him of inciting the street dogs to fight with his pet dog. This led to a scuffle between the two,” said V Renganathan, deputy commissioner of police (west).

Meanwhile, Mewa Lal’s brother, Sewa Lal, 26, arrived on the scene even as Mukund fell to the ground during the altercation. Witnessing this, an incensed Raj Kumar, who runs a mobile repair shop in the area, fetched a knife from his adjacent residence and stabbed Sewa Lal in the chest. When Sewa Lal’s brother intervened, he met the same fate.

Police said residents of the area rushed to the spot when they heard the brothers screaming in pain and informed the local police about the incident around 12:10 pm.

The two brothers were rushed to the adjacent DDU hospital where Mewa Lal was declared dead while the condition of Sewa Lal is stated to be critical

“We had initially registered a case of murder at the Mundka police station against Raj Kumar and were able to apprehend him late on the night of the incident. The weapon that he used in the commission of the crime has also been recovered from his possession,” DCP Renganathan added.
