The deceased Kuldeep, who was lodged in prison for the past one-and-a-half years, was found hanging from a grille in the bathroom.

Investigating officials said when one of the prisoners went to the bathroom at about 6.45 am, he saw Kuldeep hanging from the grille near the window.

The prison officials were informed by the inmates after which Kuldeep was rushed to Ambedkar hospital. Doctors at the hospital declared him brought dead. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered in the case.

Investigating officers said Kuldeep was lodged in jail for the kidnapping and murder of a minor boy. “Our investigation suggests that he was depressed over the outcome of his case. Other inmates claimed that Kuldeep regretted the fact that he had murdered a child. We have noted the statement of all witnesses,” said a police officer.

Kuldeep’s death on Thursday was the 35th death inside the Tihar and Rohini prisons this year. HT had earlier reported that for a total of 14,800 prisoners in both jails, lodged against a sanctioned strength of 6,250 there are only two psychologists.

DCP (outer) Vikramjit Singh said that an inquiry is being conducted into the matter. Singh said that prima facie the suicide appeared to have been triggered by depression.

Other inmates, who shared the ward with Kuldeep, told jail officers that he had not eaten anything on Wednesday night. They said that Kuldeep used to say that he would have to spend the rest of his life behind bars. “He was worried about his fate. His bail had been rejected twice in the past. It isn’t clear if he was on medication. His family members have been informed about the case,” said an investigating officer.
