Appearing for CBI, senior advocate KK Venugopal, said it would file its status report before SC by August 31. As per the agency’s earlier submission CBI was to file its chargesheet in the case before the said date.

Venugopal told the bench of justice GS Singhvi and justice AK Ganguly that the CBI, Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax department would file status report of their investigation by the next date of hearing on September 1.

The court was hearing petitions filed by an NGO, Centre for Public Interest Litigation and Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on whose plea it had directed a CBI probe into the 2G scam and has also been monitoring it.

In its last status report, ED claimed the probe was done against several firms including Swan Telecom that is alleged to be a front company of ADAG’s Reliance Telecom. The money trial has apparently led the agency to the UK, Isle of Man and the Bailiwick of Jersey.

ED has already registered six complaints under Foreign Exchange Management Act and Prevention of Money Laundering Act against some companies and their officials, including the managing director of a telecom company who is presently lodged in Tihar jail.

Former telecom minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi along with several corporate honchos besides former telecom secretary is facing the corruption case and are lodged in jail. A special court in Patiala House is conducting the hearing on day-to-day basis.
