'84 riot victims memorial: petition amended, court seeks replies
The Delhi High Court today granted four weeks time to the city government to reply to the amended petition objecting to the construction of a memorial at Gurudwara Rakabganj Sahib complex here for those killed in 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The court asked the government to file its counter replies after it allowed the petitioner to file an amended petition.Justice Sudershan Kumar Mishra also granted time to NDMC,DDA, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and its President Sardar Manjit Singh GK to file their responses to the amended petition filed by former DSGMC President Paramjit Singh Sarna seeking suspension of all construction on the ground of lack sanction from all competent authorities.
DSGMC has decided to construct a memorial to honour those who were killed in 1984 Anti-Sikh riots. The filed plea is also seeking suspension of all construction activities concerning the memorial which include laying the foundation stone during the pendency of the petition.
It has also sought directions to government and others to abide by legal obligations to ensure there is no breach of law by raising illegal structure inside the Gurdwara campus and to furnish records concerning permission granted to construct such a memorial.
The petition also said there was no tradition in Sikh religion to build memorials in gurdwaras, built to commemorate the martyrdom of gurus, and Gurdwara Rakabganj Sahib was chosen as the site for the memorial commemorated the martyrdom of ninth Sikh guru, Guru Teg Bahadur.
It also said the president of DSGMC is "seeking to politicise a place of religious worship." Anti-Sikh riots had broken out in various places of the city after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
