Sharma, 19, is a first-year B.Tech student in Noida University, while Junaid works with a placement agency in east Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar.

They were arrested by a team of special staff of southeast district police, following investigation into an Apple I-phone snatching case lodged by a woman at the New Friend’s Colony police station.

Additional commissioner of police (southeast) Ajay Chaudhry said Sharma came from a rich family and had the habit of spending on branded clothes, food and liquor in high-end restaurants to impress girlfriends.

“During interrogation, it was found that Sharma had to sell his costly mobile phone to pay his bill at a party with his girlfriends at an expensive south Delhi restaurant-cum-bar. Since he had addiction for a costly phone and he could not ask his parents to buy one for him, Sharma planned to procure a one by snatching it from a pedestrian,” said a senior investigating officer.

Sharma, the officer said, discussed the plan with Junaid, who also had craze for expensive mobile phones.

As per their plan, on December 1, the duo borrowed a bike from Sharma’s brother, Manish, and stanched an Apple I-phone from a woman, going for an evening walk in New Friends Colony, the officer said.

The same night, they snatched another costly Nokia phone in Greater Kailash. The accused had planned to snatch some more mobile phones. “But before they could execute their plan, we apprehended them,” the officer added.
