The two-year-old baby girl, admitted in the neurosurgery ICU of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ (AIIMS) Trauma Centre, was put back on ventilator early Sunday morning, after she developed difficulty in breathing.

This is the third time that the baby has been put on the ventilator since she was admitted in the hospital on January 18 by a 14-year-old girl claiming to be her mother.

“The baby continues to be critical but stable. We will put her off ventilator when her breathing rate stabilises, but need to put her back on it if she is not able to breathe on her own,” said Dr Deepak Aggarwal, associate professor, neurosurgery at the trauma centre.

The main concern for the doctors treating the baby is the infection in her lungs and brain. They are waiting for it to subside before they can perform another surgery on her. “The infection still persists inside her body due to pneumonia and meningitis. Till the infection is under control, we cannot perform the surgery to create a permanent passage inside her body to drain out the fluid getting collected in the brain,” said Dr Aggarwal.

“We’ll have to put a plastic pipe inside her. With an infection already there, there is a chance of the pipe getting infected and posing a threat to the baby,” the doctor added.

The good thing is that the baby is responding to the new antibiotic and doctors are hopeful that they will be able to control the infection.

The baby was brought in a severely injured condition to the hospital on January 18.
