"The committee wants cycle rickshaws to ply on arterial roads so that commuters can use them for travelling short distances. However, the Delhi Police are against the move. So to ensure that cycle rickshaws are allowed on the main roads, we need to bring in new legislation. The Delhi transport department is looking into the matter," said a senior Delhi government official.

Madhu Kishwar of the NGO Manushi (which works for issues related to rickshaws) said that the meeting also focused on creating parking facilities for the vehicles and ensuring that they are allowed to ply on special tracks created for them.

"It was decided that the traffic and the municipalities will ensure that the tracks are regulated," Kishwar said.
