This is part of government’s ambitious self financing ‘Bachat Lamp Yojana´ launched nationwide on Wednesday. The scheme has a potential of saving up to 10,000 MW of electricity once it covers 400 million households.

“The work on ‘Bachat Lamp Yojana´ scheme is an ongoing process. With its nationwide launch, we can expect to save 10,000 MW of electricity by covering 400 million households,” Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told reporters.

Shinde said, “The best feature of the scheme is that it is self financing scheme where government does not need to invest, rather the companies implementing the scheme would bear the cost of CFLs distributed by them and in return they would get carbon credits.”

Divulging more details about the business model of the scheme, Bureau of Energy Efficiency Director General said, “As many as 24 companies have been empaneled under the scheme. These companies would sell CFL with more than 6,000 hours life at a price of Rs 15 per unit against the market price of more than Rs 115.”

He said, “The empaneled companies can sell carbon credits to those who can not reduce their carbon emission.”
