Though there are apprehensions that naming a CM candidate now — when the elections are just about 45 days away — will do no good to the party and may even lead to rebellion, senior leaders said the party has “almost decided” to take the risk.

Senior BJP leaders said party president Rajnath Singh, chief campaigner and prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, and former president and in-charge of Delhi, Nitin Gadkari, will be in Delhi to attend the central election committee meeting where the issue of Delhi elections and possible announcement of a face to lead the party may also be made.

“We hope to take the final call very soon now. The central leadership has also factored in any possible rebellion in the ranks,” said a senior party leader.

While Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel is still hopeful of convincing the top leaders that he is popular in Delhi and should be considered for the top job, sources said the party leadership is in favour of the four-time MLA Vardhan.
