BPOs upbeat, cabs fear crisis

With the opening of Qutub Minar-Central Secretariat line on Friday, the BPO sector, with a staff base of over two lakh in Gurgaon alone, is the most excited. The amount spent on operating nearly 6,500 cabs and 1,500 buses for ferrying employees is also expected to see a cut.
A BPO major, Genpact, is offering Rs 1,500 as a monthly incentive to its employees in order to motivate them to use the Metro instead of office cabs. "The company plans to distribute the amount it was spending on cabs to its employees," said Subinder Khurana, president of Cybercity Welfare Society. Many IT firms are also planning similar measures.
Genpact also plans to start a feeder service for its employees between DLF Cybercity and the Sikanderpur station in October. "We will also launch a drive among our member-companies for motivating their employees to make use of the Metro," Khurana said.
Employees are equally upbeat about the Metro connectivity between Gurgaon and Delhi.

"We have about 400 middle-level executives using company cabs. To start with, those using own cars have decided to hop on to a Metro instead. The HR department is likely to take a call on continuing cab service soon," said Sunil Sukhija, deputy director, Huawei Telecommunications.
But taxi operators aren't excited. "Metro will eat into our income. But it doesn't ply between 11 pm and 6 am," said Manav Bahari, taxi operator.
