A brave 25-year old South Delhi resident ensured that a group of youths indulged in reckless driving faced the music. Following her pursuit of the accused and police complaint , the offender was sentenced under Motor Vehicle Act last week.

Seema (name changed) often spotted some young drivers racing two cars - Duster and Honda Brio - on Aurobindo Marg. On October 1 when saw one of these cars hit a divider, she decided to act. As she sprang towards them, the youth came out of the car, locked it and ran off. “The driver in the Honda Brio lost control and hit a divider near Adhchini. I was infuriated and decided to catch them. I chased them but they managed to get away,” she said.

Seema then asked her friend, who was on a motorcycle, to pursue the youth. However, the youth were picked up by the other car. She noted the number of the other car and gave it to the police.

In her complaint, Seema said that when she tried to stop the youths from getting into another car, they speeded it past her and she had a narrow escape.

Acting upon the complaint, the police warned the youths and arrested the driver of the car that had hit the divider. The driver, Mohammad, was presented in the court of the metropolitan magistrate Pankaj Sharma last week and sentenced seven days of imprisonment under Motor Vehicle Act 184 for over speeding.

Activists see the quick decision by the judge in the case as a good precedent in deterring the youths in the Capital from rash driving. Recently, a youth was killed when a teenager allegedly ran over a 32-year-old marketing executive while driving his father’s Mercedes car.
