Mahesh Kant Ruia (40), a resident of Meerut, allegedly took lakhs of rupees from businessmen in Chandni Chowk and fled from the city with his family a few months ago.
“Ruia worked as a broker for the last seven years. He duped people with the help of his associate Ramesh, who provided Ruia with forged receipts,” said Devesh Srivastva, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North).
"Ruia used to arrange money for people from prospective lenders and duped people of a total of Rs 7 lakh," police said.
"The post-dated cheques he issued in lieu of the loan were drawn on fictitious banks accounts," said an officer.
The police arrested Ruia in Meerut after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) gave his address. “His son studies in a school in Meerut and that's how we traced him,” said an officer.
