BSF to be deployed on Myanmar border

In a move aimed at upgrading security along the Indo-Myanmar border, the home ministry has decided to entrust the border guarding duty along the 1,653 km border to the Border Security Force and draw up a comprehensive plan to build a network of roads to improve accessibility.

The ministry is expected to ask the Cabinet Committee on Security to vet its proposal.

The Assam Rifles was tasked to protecting this stretch but its deployment pattern is focused more towards counter-insurgency duties rather than guarding the border.

BSF director general Raman Srivastava said they had agreed to the suggestion to take up this responsibility. "We have told the government we need additional 41 battalions... to guard the border," Srivastava said.

The CCS would also be asked to fund expansion of the road network along this border.
