By February 1, all public transport vehicles plying on city roads will have to display the credentials of the driver and other staff on the vehicle.

After a directive from the Delhi Police, the transport department issued a circular, making it mandatory to display names, contact details and photographs of drivers and other staff on public transport vehicles. The move comes in the wake of the 23-year-old’s student’s gang rape in Delhi.

The police had asked for the implementation of the rule to make women commuters feel safer. From early February, the local and traffic police will crack down on the violators, said police.

“We have asked the transport department to display identities (of all staff, including drivers) in buses and other public transport vehicles.

The transport department sought time till January 31 for this,” said Neeraj Kumar, Delhi Police commissioner. The display chart will have the PSV badge number provided by the transport department, he said.

The traffic police are now revising the Delhi Motor Vehicles Rules to fix a penalty for violation of the new rule.

According to sources, all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Delhi have been directed to collect information about the drivers and conductors of commercial passenger vehicles.

Kumar said DTC and cluster buses would son be connected through a GPS system so that their movement can be tracked.
