Owing to heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir and thereabouts, icy winds from the Himalayas have arrived at the Capital with plenty of moisture.

Sunday saw the minimum temperature dipping as low as 8.7 degrees Celsius, the season’s lowest so far and a couple of degrees lower than normal. The maximum, too, was low at 26 degrees Celsius — four degrees below normal.

“It is likely to remain as cold and misty in the next two days. The chill factor is here to stay,” said the Duty Officer at the Safdarjung unit of the Met department.

Snowfall in the Himalayas is coupled with the northwesterly winds, which bring the icy sting to the weather in the city, making the “felt-temperature” much less than what the mercury shows.

With an infusion of moisture, the day began with mild fog in the morning but not enough to cause any disruptions to either road traffic or airport.

“If November is this cold, December and January will probably be extremely chilly,” said Mathew Verghese, an MNC executive who lives in Vasant Vihar.

This time of the season the days are usually muggy while the nights see a pleasant dip in the mercury.

“Light sweaters are not enough anymore. It’s time for the heavy woollens,” said Ekta Rai, a teacher living in Gulmohar Park.

The Met department has predicted mist in the next three days.

BBC Weather said that the next five days would be sunny with the mercury plummeting to 23 degrees Celsius.
