The maximum temperature since Monday was recorded at 14 degree Celsius -- eight degrees below normal. It was the lowest of the season so far, the Met department said.

However, Tuesday's minimum of 9.3 degree Celsius was two notches above normal for this time of the year.

Northwesterly winds blowing over north India and snowfall in higher reaches of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh lowered the temperature in the national capital, the Met office said.

However, as the day advanced, the sun came out giving some comfort to the people reeling under severe cold conditions for the past one week.

Visibility range fell to 800 metres early in the morning because of fog but flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International airport here were normal.

The forecast for Tuesday is mist and shallow fog in the morning with maximum and minimum temperatures likely to hover around 16 and eight degrees Celsius respectively.
