According to a senior excise department official, in 2012 alone, the excise intelligence bureau has seized 1.43 lakh bottles of non-duty paid liquor—liquor meant for Haryana or Rajasthan but sold in Delhi. They have also impounded more than 400 vehicles used to smuggle this liquor into Delhi.

In 2011, the excise intelligence bureau seized about 70,000 illegal bottles of liquor and impounded about 300 vehicles.

“In many cases, they remove the original labels and put fake labels. These labels also have ‘to be sold in CSD canteen only’ printed on them,” a senior excise department official said.
