CBI court convicts senior bureaucrat for graft

A special CBI court sentences a senior MP Govt official and slaps a fine of Rs 5,000 for taking bribes for selection to government jobs.

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court has sentenced a senior official of the Madhya Pradesh government to two and a half years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 over taking bribes for selection to government jobs.

"The court of special judge (CBI) in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, on Wednesday convicted Vinay Prakash Upadhyay, deputy director of the Staff Selection Commission, Madhya Pradesh region, to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years and six months and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000," the CBI said in New Delhi in a press statement on Thursday.

"Upadhyay was convicted for nominating six individuals for appointment as telecom office assistants and lower division clerk even though these candidates did not appear for the examination and qualify for these posts. The six candidates were also convicted," it added.

According to the CBI, two cases were registered against Upadhyay in 1995 and two cases against the six individuals - Naval Kishore, Anil Kumar, Bed Ram Singh, Mahesh Chand Gupta, Laksmichand and Rakesh Kumar - for paying and accepting bribes for the appointments.
