CBI grills Raja aide, HFCL top official

The CBI on Tuesday grilled businessman Sadiq Batcha, alleged aide of former telecom minister A Raja, and Himachal Futuristic Communications Limited (HFCL)'s managing director Mahendra Nahata as part of its ongoing probe into alleged irregularities in the allocation of 2G spectrum and telecom licences.

Batcha, managing director of real estate firm Green House Promoters, was questioned about certain suspicious financial transactions in his firm and his alleged proximity to Raja, said a CBI source.

The CBI suspects Batcha could be linked to the scam's money-trail and laundering of the illegal proceeds of in the scam, with his firm acting as conduits.

Raja's relatives - including his wife, brother - were former directors of Batcha's firm. Grilled over several hours on Tuesday afternoon, Batcha left in his car around 7 pm. The CBI had in December searched Batcha's official and residential premises in Tamil Nadu.

The CBI also questioned Nahata over the funding and transactions of Datacom Solutions (now Videocon Telecommunications), which was among the telecom firms awarded licence in January 2008.

The Supreme Court has directed the CBI to check eligibility criteria of operators who won 2G spectrum licences.

On Tuesday, the Enforcement Directorate, also grilled Raja's brother Kalia Perumal about financial dealings of some of his firms.
