In a letter to Chief Secretaries, the Secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ajay Shankar, cited the Gujarat example, stating that other states should also ensure regular inspection of infrastructure projects.
"It may be noted that the government of Gujarat has recently announced a scheme on monitoring of quality outcome from government spending in the state on infrastructural projects, under which it has been prescribed that the inspection of project work shall be carried out only by accredited inspection bodies," Shankar said.
He further said quality in project implementation could be ensured by prescribing periodic review by accredited inspection bodies which would verify whether the parameters set in the government contracts are being met.
He said the Quality Council of India (QCI) could help the states in drafting a detailed system for inspection.
Captains of Indian industry had recently lauded Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for taking the state on a fast track development.
