Finance minister P Chidambaram cited the stand of successive governments and the international practices prevailing in most capital cities to suggest that the federal government controls the police force in national capitals.

Addressing a press conference after a meeting of the Union cabinet, Chidambaram admitted that the Delhi Police are not fully prepared to handle situations involving "flash mob".

Chidambaram also ruled out suggestions and demands that Delhi Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar should be removed. He said the need of the hour is to restore normalcy in the city. "Delhi police commissioner is doing his job."
