The Capital and several adjacent satellite towns crawled on Monday as thousands of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists, staged a 'chakka jam' in protest of the unexpected hike in fuel prices.
Shouting anti-government slogans, the contingent of BJP workers staged demonstrations at prominent transit points across the city with the party’s Delhi chief Vijender Gupta leading the demonstrators at many places.
“Traffic was disrupted at at least 14 prominent crossings such as the Lal Quila Chowk, Ambedkar Nagar, Subhash Nagar Morh, Uttam Nagar, Moti Nagar Chowk, Khajoori Chowk,” said a senior traffic police officer.
He said traffic was also thrown out of gear at the Richi-Rich (Ring Road) crossing, Welcome Metro station, Vikas Marg, Jahangirpuri, Hamdard Chowk, Patparganj, Moti Bagh and the Mangolpuri marble market. However, things were brought under control and protesters dissipated “soon” after they took to the streets.
Gupta openly challenged the incumbent government with bleak prospects of many such demonstrations if the spiralling fuel prices were not brought under control.
“The masses are already in the grip of inflation, the massive hike in fuel prices has confirmed that the present central government was totally against aam admi,” said Ajay Gaur, Faridabad district president of the BJP.
The protesters also torched effigy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
