City’s crop of young, educated criminals

They have studied in the best schools in the country, belong to respectable families and have a good life. But they want more — swanky cars, even swankier girlfriends, trips aboard and everything that money can buy. And they will do anything to get all of it.

The new age snatchers, robbers, cheats and murderers have an impressive resume that includes an MBA degree.

Almost 40% crimes in the national Capital were committed by the so-called 'educated' lot that includes management degree holders, BBA students, hotel management graduates and scores of Delhi University passouts, the police said.

In the last one year, 24 MBA graduates or aspirants, 17 BBA graduates, 11 hotel management students and at least 71 DU students were caught for various crimes including cheating, snatching, robberies and murders. More and more educated youngsters are getting into a life of crime for want of easy cash.

A 'degree' in crime

According to Delhi Police, in recent cases a lot many MBA graduates were involved.

"Many of the snatchers we have caught in the last one year are educated and come from good families. Their main motivation is easy money as many want to lead a good life. For that they are ready to do anything starting from coming
up with schemes to dupe people to committing robberies. When we arrested them their family members were surprised and shocked as they did not have any idea of what was happening," said a senior police officer.

On December 13 last year, two students were arrested in south Delhi for allegedly cheating members of a prominent club of thousands of rupees.

The accused, Amir Hussain, was a BBA student and Dushyant Verma was pursuing hotel management. They had stolen data of members of Club Mahindra and allegedly made calls to those members who failed to make payments. The accused used to represent himself as an employee of Club Mahendra and offered people attractive offers and vanished with their money.

The motivation
Buying luxuries is the primary motive of this new breed of criminals.
"They want to splurge on their girlfriends. It is not about wants and need with them. Most of the snatchers and
robbers caught today are educated and smart but simply refuse to work," added the officer.
