Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit inspected one of the models of a small car which could serve as an alternative to auto rickshaws in Delhi on Thursday. According to sources, a representative from a private car manufacturer met the chief minister, expressing their willingness to provide such cars. These cars will charge the same fare as that charged by the auto rickshaws. Hindustan Times had on Wednesday reported about the government’s proposal to replace autos with cheap cars.

"One of the representatives of a private car manufacturer met the chief minister. A model of a small car was also shown, which could be used to supplement the existing fleet of auto rickshaws in the city. These cabs will be fitted with GPS," said a senior Delhi government official.

According to the senior officials, Dikshit has said that the model and the proposal to introduce small cars will be examined thoroughly by the transport department.
“The representative said that they have already supplied such cars in many parts of the country and the cars are running successfully,” added the official. The government is keen to provide such cabs which could serve as a better alternative.
