Currently, there is no system in place to inform the commuters about the length of the next train. Anticipating a six-coach train, commuters often queue up at the fag end of the platforms and often fail to enter four-coach trains.
"We will start introducing the system on line 2 (Gurgaon-Jahangirpuri) next month. In six months, the system will be in place in all the 139 Metro stations," said Vikas Kumar, general manager (Operations), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Once it is in place, the passenger information display system (PIDS) will tell you whether the next train is four-coach, six-coach or eight-coach, he said.
“We want to start the system immediately after eight-coach trains are put into service in November,” Kumar added.
DMRC officials are currently checking how well the system functions.
“To ensure that commuters do not face any inconvenience in case the system malfunctions, we are testing it in less congested stations on line 2 and 3 (Noida-Dwarka),” said an official.
However, many commuters claim the system does malfunction. Nilu Pandit, who takes the Metro from Vaishali to Barakhamba every day, said: “Most of the times, the PIDS misleads us. It will show that a six-coach train will arrive next. But usually, a four-coach train comes.”
Delhi Metro officials said its technical staff was working to improve the efficiency of the software-based system and that it will start functioning properly in a few weeks.
