Congress woos slum dwellers in manifesto part 2

The Congress on Tuesday made a final attempt to woo its traditional vote bank—people living in slum clusters —as Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh released its second and concluding part of the manifesto with special mention of “law of Right to housing, shelter and property rights”.

“Until the poor have secure and permanent accommodation to move into, they will not be asked to vacate their current dwellings. The law will give property rights through a ‘legal document of entitlement’ giving free hold rights to all slum dwellers,” the Congress leader announced at a press conference along with the party’s campaign in-charge and candidate from Sadar Bazaar Ajay Maken, Haroon Yusuf and other senior leaders.

In addition, the Congress has included a slew of promises in the poll document to improve infrastructure, smooth transition and women security.“The project of mono rail and extension of the Metro network will be undertaken. Infrastructure projects lagging behind due to the lackadaisical attitude of the previous government will also be sped up,” Singh said.

“We will restart the policy of giving a compensation of `1 crore to martyrs (police or army official), losing their lives on duty while protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state,” he said.

Referring to the recent attacks on churches, he announced the party’s future plan to revamp religious bodies or boards. “Every religion will get recognition. Considering incidents of communal attacks over religious places are increasing, we will take steps to ensure that people will be able to practice their religion freely. We will come out with legislations where public will get the right to nominate members and chairmen of their religious committees like wakf boards,” he stated.

Speaking at the function, Maken promised hiring Urdu and Punjabi Teachers in Delhi Schools. “We will create space for hawkers and vendors in the city,” he said.
