“Policemen who commit criminal acts deserve harsher punishment than others who commit such acts because it is the duty of the policemen to protect the people and not break the law themselves. If the protector becomes the predator, civilised society will cease to exist,” the bench said.

The SC overturned the HC verdict and awarded life imprisonment to constable Kishore Singh, 10-year imprisonment to accused ASI Sumer Dan and six-month jail to SHO Sohan Singh for chopping off Jugta Ram’s penis in 1994.

The HC had acquitted Sohan and Sumer and reduced Kishore’s sentence to already served. The SC said the HC verdict amounted to “gross travesty of justice”.

CBI had contended that in 1994 the trio took the victim to the police station and chopped off his penis with a knife.
