Cops' no to non-motorised lane

After objecting to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), the Delhi traffic police has now expressed its displeasure with the creation of a separate lane for non-motorised vehicles.

Senior traffic police officers said the non-motorised traffic (NMT) lane was eating up almost one-third space on the road, leading to chaos.

They said they have recently stopped construction work on Bhisham Pitamah Marg —the road that leads to the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium.

"The ongoing streetscaping work has taken up almost two-third of the road width at some places between Lodi Road intersection and NBCC intersection on Bhisham Pitamah Marg," said a traffic police official.

Senior Delhi government officials, however, said that the plan to have NMT lanes is part of the state government's emerging policy to create similar lanes on all major roads in the city.
